Auld Reekie bout for Lumos

14 February 2010

The Auld Reekie Roller Girls beat Leeds in a Valentine’s Bout at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh, and raised nearly £200 for Lumos.

The team, lead by Moxie Emerald (all registered roller derby players have a pseudonym), won by only three points in the final minutes of play. The Bout was named Jailhouse Block in a tribute to Elvis and an Elvis impersonator turned up on the day to support the teams. They also held a bake sale and sold out of all the delicious cakes on offer.

Roller derby bouts are played by two teams who skate in two minute jams anti-clockwise around an oval track. In each 2 minute jam, both team of 14 players puts 4 blockers and jammer each on track. The 8 blockers skate together as a pack and the jammers score the points by breaking their way through the pack of blockers. After the jammer has passed the pack once, every opposing teams blocker she passes after that with legal hitting and blocking moves, gains one point for her team. The blocker’s job is to assist their jammer and block the opposing team. As it is a contact sport, it can be dangerous, and one Auld Reekie girl nearly broke her jaw. However, both teams came away unscathed and thoroughly enjoyed the Bout.

Thanks so much to both teams who made the match so memorable and raised vital funds for Lumos/CHLG. Thanks to Joanna McCall (aka Jo-ggernaught) for keeping us updated with this great news.
